BANKART LESION

  • Definition:
    Bony Bankart – A fracture of the inferior glenoid
    Soft Bankart – A displaced antero-inferior labral tearOccurs secondary to anterior dislocations or subluxations.

    Ix:  Xray – post-traumatic, post-reduction – will not reveal soft bankart lesion, CT, MRI
    US – may reveal labral cyst which may be evidence of a labral tear.

    Management:
    Acute:  Immobilization – conflicting data re: External Immobilization in 20 degrees, may benefit patients within 24-48hrs.  Arrange for further imaging CT/MRI.
    Post immobilization – rehabilitation, progressive range of motion exercises, rotator cuff strengthening, scapular stabilization exercises
    Refer to Orthopedics for surgical repair if recurrent instability.
